Why Buying Indian Handicrafts is More Than Just Shopping

Why Buying Indian Handicrafts is More Than Just Shopping

It’s strange but true: Indian handicrafts are more valued abroad than they are at home.

Even more ironic is this—India imports mass-produced, under-invoiced, third-grade goods from countries we have huge trade deficits with (some over $40 billion!). The current government has made strides in curbing it, but the damage is still significant.

So... Why Should You Buy Indian Handicrafts?

I’m not an economist—but I know this: the more money circulates within the country, the faster the economy grows.

Let’s do a quick thought experiment. If 30 crore Indians (the active spending population) bought even one handicraft item worth ₹500 every quarter, we’d be looking at:

  • ₹15,000 crore in a single quarter

  • ₹60,000 crore in a year

That’s more than India’s annual NREGA/MNREGA budget!

Imagine the impact—not just economically, but culturally. That money goes into the hands of rural artisans, many of whom are barely surviving while keeping age-old crafts alive.

Where to Buy Real Handicrafts?

They're more accessible than you think:

  • Online stores (like ours!)

  • Craft exhibitions & haats

  • Khadi Gramodyog Bhavans

  • Social media sellers who work directly with artisans

Every Purchase Is a Vote

A vote for India.A vote for artistry.A vote for the soul behind the skill.

So next time you're tempted by a machine-made imported item, remember: there's an artisan in India whose craft might disappear if we don’t choose consciously.

Make your next purchase a meaningful one.🛍
